How to Improve Any Business Process in 5 Simple Steps

Step 1 Define The Process

Articulate and write down the “thing” you want to improve. Defining your issue will create focus, understand the resources needed, and establish a clear objective.

Step 2 Measure It

Gather the data on the current process. Establish and understand your baseline performance before any changes.

Step 3 Map The Flow

A simple flowchart will make it easier to communicate and collaborate with team members. It is valuable exercise to comprehensively visualize the process from start to finish. Articulate the inputs, action steps, outputs and outliers.

Step 4 Implement Change

Implement the change that was identified. Start small. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Loop in all team members who will be impacted by the change. Changing behavior is hard. Create a vision and touch base frequently.

Step 5 Measure Again

Measure your process again. Did it work? Great! On to the next issue. Did it not work? Great! You found out what didn’t work. Time to try something else.
